QUIDICHISM - January 2002
The Official Quid Newsletter

Happy New Year. Don't die.

Quid took full advantage of a week off from public education and finished almost three songs out of the six we plan to record. "Stir" is available for download on our website and "Crouching in the Doorway" is recorded, mixed and mastered. I'll get that online in the next week. "Fifty-Gallons" is well on its way, with drums, bass and keyboards already recorded. Our recording sessions are going quite well, although with school in the way, our progress will definitely slow down. I hope to see everything recorded by February, which means we could potentially have a 6-track EP available this Spring. But perhaps it's too early to start talking about that. However, "Stir" and "Doorway" sound really good. Make sure you download them.

On a completely unrelated note, newspapers, magazines and cheesy television shows have all recently been talking about the best and worst in music this year. Personally, I can't listen to one more monotonous report. It seems most critics seem to agree on naming the same sucky albums of 2001 as the best albums of the year. Now it's time for me to have my say.

Without further ado, here's Scott's BEST AND WORST OF MUSIC IN 2001:

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Despite what those critics say, only one album was released this year that people may actually still listen to later in life. Without even thinking twice, I name Tool's "Lateralus" Album of the Year. The band's fourth studio album is simply timeless and excellent. Although mainstream radio never made it past "Schism" and a terribly edited version of "Lateralis" that brought a nine-minute masterpiece down to a four-minute radio single, this album absolutely scores an 11 out of 10 from the first notes of "The Grudge" to the 20-minute epic metal trilogy, "Disposition," "Reflection," and "Triad." Thank you Maynard, Danny, Adam and Justin.

RUNNER-UP ALBUM OF THE YEAR
I would do no justice to 2001 if I only recognized Tool's album. System of a Down's "Toxicity" easily wins runner up. Radio super-hit "Chop Suey" is certainly the album's gem, but the entire album is great music. Politically charged "Prison Song," along with "Shimmy," "Toxicity," and "Aerials" (and of course the short and sweet secret track which features System playing some native instruments) make this album kick ass.

MOST OVERRATED ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Another no-brainer: The Strokes' "Is This It?" The Strokes debut album had such unanimous critic support that I had to check this album out. Not wanting to actually spend money, I downloaded just about the whole thing, and I can assure you, "Last Nite" is the only catchy tune on that thing. If ever I've had a reason to lose all respect for professional music critics, this album (and of course Rage Against the Machine's "Battle of Los Angeles," which Spin gave a perfect 10) just simply takes the cupcake. Save your money: don't buy this album OR any major music magazines this month.

ABSOLUTE WASTE OF SILICON AND PLASTIC
This year's album I could definitely do without is Limp Bizkit's remix CD, "New Old Ones." A remix of a cover... that's what we need more of. As if Limp Bizkit's music was original to begin with, they went and copied their own music to try to fight back after releasing the straight-up embarrassing "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water." Rollin' Rolling' Rollin' indeed. Fred Durst: die. He could serve the music industry better from a coffin than a stage or studio. Limp Bizkit brings down the quality of music in the world yet again with their latest release. Don't buy Limp Bizkit, don't request Limp Bizkit, and definitely go see Limp Bizkit live, unless you like 12 year-old girls and young gay males.

I won't even touch the 2001 releases from Britney Spears and that Julio guy's son.
